What Does a Facelift Involve?

Topical treatments, anti-aging injectables, and other minor treatments can do a lot to produce a more youthful complexion. However, they are still limited in what they can do. If you are interested in a major transformation, you might be thinking about getting a facelift. But what exactly does a facelift involve? This blog post walks you through the procedure.

Consultation

Before your surgery, you will sit down with your plastic surgeon to discuss the details of your case. They will learn about your medical history and ask for some details about what you hope to accomplish. Based on the information they gather, they can propose a personalized treatment plan.

Surgery

You should not feel anything during your procedure. In fact, many facelifts are performed under general anesthesia, so you should be unaware of what is happening throughout your surgery.

The details of the surgery can vary. They depend on the specific type of facelift that you are undergoing. During a traditional facelift, incisions are made in the hairline near the temples, and they circle around in front of the ears. Then, the skin is lifted, the fat beneath it is reshaped (added or removed in strategic places) to provide a more youthful appearance. Excess skin is removed, and the skin is then re-draped and secured in place with sutures. The procedure usually takes 3 – 6 hours.

A limited facelift works similarly, but the incision is shorter. A neck lift has an incision that starts near the earlobe and goes into the lower scalp. A small incision under the chin is also necessary.

Recovery

Most patients are able to go home on the same day as their surgery. You can expect some soreness, swelling, and general discomfort as you heal. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions to support your recovery and minimize the risk of post-op complications. For example, you may need to get plenty of rest and avoid the use of certain topical products.

Recovery can take several weeks; it might even be a few months before your face feels normal again. During your healing period, you should visit your surgeon for any and all recommended follow-ups.

Is a Facelift Worth It?

Clearly, a facelift is a major undertaking! However, it is well worth it for image-conscious individuals who are not getting the results they want with more conservative measures. It could make you look many years younger! Talk to a qualified plastic surgeon so you can make a well-informed decision about whether a facelift is right for you.
