What do Nikki Minaj, Kim Kardashian and Iggy Azalea have in common? They are each known for their voluptuous butt and are an example of an emerging trend. The American view of the ideal body type has changed over the last decade. The wafer thin look is out in favor of a healthier, full-figured athletic/toned body and with this look comes a fuller butt. A fuller, rounder butt is often perceived as more youthful, athletic and sexy.

The Brazilian Butt Lift, also known as an Auto-Fat Transfer and Gluteal Augmentation with Implants are two procedures available to enlarge the gluteal region. The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure is done by liposuctioning areas of unwanted fat on the body and then transferring the harvested fat into the muscle of the buttocks to build up size and tone. Butt Implants are used on patients that are too thin to harvest fat or that do not desire the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. An implant is placed into the gluteal muscle to enlarge the buttocks, similar to placing a breast implant for breast augmentation. The size of the augmentation will vary based on the person’s desire. It can range from a subtle augmentation just to fill out an aged buttock so one looks better in dresses and jeans to a significant over exaggerated look. Both of these procedures are very challenging and should only be performed by an experienced board certified plastic surgeon.

Unqualified individuals known as “injectors” insert dangerous substances that are not meant to be in the human body. The complications from these products can be catastrophic and include painful nodules, skin loss, and even death. If it seems too inexpensive or too good to be true, it usually is.
