Why Are My Wrinkles Getting Worse?

Woman looking in mirror, concerned about wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural consequence of aging, and they are nothing to be embarrassed about! However, it is completely understandable if you are still interested in looking as young as possible. This blog post talks about some lifestyle factors that could worsen your wrinkles and the steps you can take to maintain your youthful glow.

Spending Too Much Time in the Sun

Overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can accelerate the formation of wrinkles and other signs of aging. That is why you should wear SPF daily and try to avoid spending too much time outside in the middle of the day. Also, keep in mind that tanning beds can be just as harmful as the sun!

Smoking

Smoking is bad for overall health, including your skin health. Additionally, constantly puckering your mouth to inhale cigarette smoke can lead to the formation of lines around your lips. If you smoke, talk to your primary care physician about resources that can help you kick the habit.

Poor Skincare Routine

As you age, your skin can become dryer and more easily irritated. As a result, you might be more prone to show signs of aging. Fortunately, you do not need a complex or expensive skincare routine to keep yourself looking good. Be sure to cleanse and moisturize twice a day. It can also be helpful to apply a topical retinoid each night.

Repetitive Movements

Over time, natural facial expressions like smiles and frowns can contribute to the formation of lines and wrinkles. You should not be afraid to show your emotions on your face, but if you are concerned about signs of aging, you may want to consider getting BOTOX injections to limit the movement of your facial muscles and help you achieve a younger overall appearance.

A Poor Diet

A diet full of highly processed foods can deprive your body of the nutrients that it needs to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Try to incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables into your meal plan. Healthy fats and proteins can also be beneficial.

Tugging on Your Skin

Do you tug on your eyes when applying eyeliner, or do you use aggressive motions when cleansing your face? These habits can apply too much stress to your skin and contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Remember, gentle is better!

Being Sedentary

Exercise boosts blood flow and can promote the production of collagen, an important structural protein in the skin. Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days each week.

Wrinkles are unavoidable, but that does not mean you should not try to slow them down! Good habits can do much to keep you looking young and healthy.
